There has never been a simple answer. Throughout history, photographs have been seen through different critical lenses. Like a camera lens capable of bringing different aspects of the same scene into and out of focus, each critical lens values different aspects of an image's reality and holds it's own "truth claim" - it's own understanding of truth.
